"CENTRE OF VOCATIONAL STUDIES (CVS)"

VISION:

The conventional pattern of higher education has not been successful in providing the required degree of competitive superiority vis a vis the volatile employment scenario in the world of modern business, dominated by strong currents of privatisation, liberalisation and globalisation. Furthermore, structural reforms, new entrepreneur friendly industrial policies, easy credit availability and similar measures have opened up new vistas for willing ones to start new ventures and indirectly boosted demand for professionals. True and meaningful vocationalisation in higher education is, therefore, the need of the time and Kumaun University, Nainital has quickly responded by establishing a full-fledged ‘Centre of Vocational Studies’ (CVS).

The prime objective of CVS is to take care of unemployability in higher education, hone the human capital, and contribute its bit to the greater cause of   development. CVS, therefore, proposes to offer specifically designed courses at all the levels in higher education, i.e., add-on certificate courses, advanced post-graduate diploma programs, and post-graduate degree programs. Considering the previous position of placements, it can safely be inferred that the students of CVS are in high demand in market, with previous batches placed with ICICI Bank, Priyagold Industries, Induslnd Bank, GlenMark Pharmaceuticals, Jagsonpal Pharmaceuticals etc to name a few. And the students of current batch already have offers for their summer training with stipends.

In order to achieve it mission, the CVS has since inception, emphasçed on strong, meaningful and vibrant interaction and association with the industry and government. CVS organçed a two days (17-18 Feb., 2005) workshop on "VAT in Uttaranchal: Issues in Transition" organçed at ATI, Nainital. The workshop saw a huge participation of people from different sections of society, ., academia, industry, trade, government, common consumer, and tax practioners etc. The sincerity of this effort of CVS was very appreciated by the industry and in response to it Mr. Yogesh Jindal and Mr. Ramesh Pal announced scholarships worth Rs. 21,000/ each in the inaugural session of the workshop itself for the students. Additionally use of most modern communication technology and deliberate persuasion, involving several meetings, culminated in receiving books worth Rs. 1,00,000/- from Dr. Roop Singh Bhakuni, Director, UANA, America and the efforts continues…

On December 21-22, 2005 another workshop on IPRs was organçed. It was funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. This workshop was very well attended by the participants from different Universities and institutes. The renowned experts Professor Biju Pal Abraham (IIM, Calcutta), Professor (Mrs.) S.K. Verma (DU) and Professor B.N. Pande (BHU) were the key resource persons in this workshop.

During the financial year 2005-2006, the Govt. of Uttaranchal sanctioned a sum of Rs. 10.77 lakhs for setting up an Advanced Centre of Development Studies, Research and Extension.

A very critical aspect of teaching is the pedagogy adopted. Keeping in view, the professional nature of course and the expectations from the passing graduates, the CVS faculty members use a host of tools such as case-study, group discussion, presentation, lectures etc, to not only help the students assimilate the concepts but to enable them to apply them to practical situations. At CVS a continuous mode of assessment is followed using class tests, assignments, surprise quçzes etc. As we receive students from varied educational background, CVS also provides English course (non credit) and personality development modules to makeup for any deficiencies liable to hamper the evolution of personality and progress of the students during their course of study or their career.

Presently, the Centre is functioning as a unit of DSB campus in Nainital, of Kumaun University. It is located in the lush green environs of Sleepy Hollow (ground floor, Central Library), away from the hubbub of the town and the main campus.
